Product Description

Strung from 108 beads of Karungali — a rare, dense ebony native to South India — this mala has been used in Vedic practice for centuries to deepen focus during meditation and japa. Its natural weight and texture make each bead distinctly tactile, grounding your attention bead by bead.

Why It Matters

Karungali (Ebony) is considered one of the most potent woods for meditation in South Indian temple traditions. Unlike rudraksha, it carries no deity-specific association — making it equally accessible to anyone seeking a grounding daily practice, regardless of their spiritual background.

Your Sankalpa

For the intention of stillness. Wear or hold during your morning practice as a physical anchor for the day's first quiet moment.

About Karungali

Karungali is the Tamil name for Indian Ebony (Diospyros ebenum) — one of the densest, hardest natural materials found in India. It is so dense it sinks in water. This extreme density, combined with its deep black colour and resistance to decay, made it a material of choice for temple construction, sacred object carving, and practice malas in South Indian tradition. Unlike rudraksha, Karungali has no specific deity association — it is used across traditions as a grounding material, associated with the neutralisation of scattered or agitated states. In temple workshops, it was traditionally used to carve deity figures specifically because of its durability and what was understood as its capacity to hold sacred energy. As a mala material, it brings both the physical benefit of weight and texture and the cultural depth of South India's living temple tradition.

Care Instructions

Frequently Asked Questions

Karungali is Indian Ebony (Diospyros ebenum) — one of the densest woods found in India. In South Indian temple tradition, it is used for ritual objects, deity carvings, and practice malas because of its grounding properties. Unlike many woods, it does not warp, rot, or lighten with age.

Each mala comes with a printed certificate of authenticity confirming the material source and quality verification. Karungali is often diluted or substituted — ours is tested and certified.

Both. Traditionally worn or held during practice, but many people wear their mala throughout the day as a tactile anchor and reminder of their intention.
